Fire and Lighting

Pitt Rivers

FIRE AND LIGHTING

INTRODUCTION:

What we chose in the Pitt Rivers museum was the section of fire. We picked it because we think is such an interesting theme because it has many uses, and it was one of the elements of the evolution of humans. Because what would happened if the humans wouldn't discovered fire?
So we picked also instruments of making fire, lamps and lighting , and fire and rituals.
We could also see the evolution of light (lamps) and it is such an interesting thing that some societies still use fire for rituals and in some cases for religion.

METHODS TO MAKE FIRE

In some places in Europe, for example: Sweden, Germany and Russia found the friction Method. Consists in friction between two pieces of wood.
Humans developed the skills and equipment to made and sustain fire.
Another tools that created sparks to light had techniques that involved the use of chemicals.

LAMPS AND LIGHTING.

The most important oil-burning lamps were made of materials like stone, clay, shell and metal.
This lamps were fulled with unpleasent smelllings such as vegetable, whale, fish oil or scraps of fat.
A lot of lamps were designed to hold rushes or a splinter of  wesinous wood.

FIRE AND RITUALS

Fire has many uses both ritual and practical. In Africa, evidence for exploitationof natural fires may date back as far as 1.5 million years ago. From these early beginnins, humans developed the skills and equipment to make and sustain fire.
Some examples are the Vedic Ritual, Upper Arani, and used ceremonially in Japan.
